With the announcement that Shin Godzilla director Hideaki Anno is set to revamp Kamen Rider in 2023, there's no better time to revisit one of the series' greatest hits.

Kamen Rider ZO is a superhero-horror fusion that sees a victim of human experimentation battle an army of monsters.

It's rough and ready with a thin plot, but that's to be expected from its low budget and brief runtime.

What you might not expect, however, is just how much experimental artistry is packed into its 48 minutes.

Director Keita Amemiya provides a special effects showcase combining suitmation, stop-motion and CGI, with a uniquely grotesque aesthetic that puts it firmly into the canon of industrial body horror popularised by David Cronenberg and Shinya Tsukamoto.

It's the kind of film you might once have found in a video store or on a late-night horror block, now easier than ever to access and share.

Kamen Rider ZO is available to watch for free on YouTube.
