Weekend Pick: Joint Security Area (2000)

It’s been over a year now since Parasite made history by securing an Oscar for Best Picture, and film fans around the world are continuing to discover the riches of South Korean cinema—here’s one masterpiece you don't want to miss.

Joint Security Area is the third feature from Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, The Handmaiden) and chronicles an investigation into the violent deaths of two soldiers in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.

The film really kicks into gear when we discover what ultimately triggered the tragic incident: an unlikely camaraderie between enemy soldiers.

JSA focuses not on big twists or action set pieces, but rather the tender (and often hilarious) interactions between four men who under any other circumstances would have been lifelong friends.

With a talented cast led by the ever-brilliant Song Kang-ho, it remains a highlight of Park Chan-wook’s stellar career and among South Korea’s finest cinematic works.

JSA is available on Blu-Ray and Arrow Player.
