Weekend Pick: Away (2019)
With The Mitchells vs the Machines, Soul, and Raya and the Last Dragon all recently released, it's been a hell of a few months for top quality animations.
Solely written, directed and created by Gints Zilbalodis, this small-budget passion project packs an ambitious punch - with the voiceless lead character and his little two-winged companion spanning some gorgeous landscapes and tackling countless dangerous situations throughout this film's tight 1h15 runtime.
Many of the visuals are absolutely stunning, with the vibrant colours and original aesthetic proving more of a treat on the eye than the movie's fiscal constraints should allow.
And, despite there being no dialogue, the story is surprisingly moving and genuinely engrossing, hooking the audience in with its mystery and intrigue.
So, before checking out the latest $100m animation, maybe take a punt on this little gem. It's well worth your time.
