10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) Review
To celebrate the 5 year anniversary of 10 Cloverfield Lane, we take a look back at the film and see if it holds up today.
It’s been over 5 years since the release of 10 Cloverfield Lane and the world still hasn’t quite recovered since it hit cinemas. As the directorial debut of Dan Trachtenberg and the spiritual sequel to the found footage film Cloverfield, the film was intended to be a stand-alone event. After jumping into production under Bad Robot, this soon changed.
10 Cloverfield Lane follows a woman named Michelle, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who ends up getting in an accident and finds herself being rescued by a stranger. She ends up in his bunk and learns that the bunker’s owner is named Howard, played by John Goodman. Michelle soon finds out that the world above isn’t safe and she has no choice but to stay trapped.
Another stranger named Emmett manages to sneak into the bunker, played by John Gallagher Jr, which angers Howard. As the film progresses, we learn more about the inhabitants and discover the dangers of the inside.
The acting from all the cast is incredible, each playing their parts with brilliance; Winstead the determined heroine constantly fighting, Goodman the eerie stranger, and Gallagher Jr the comedic relief and support for the hero. You’ll watch the film full of anxiety as you feel the emotions of Michelle and just want her to succeed.
10 Cloverfield Lane is filmed in a third-person narrative and at times seems like a staged drama. The cinematography, the editing and music all blend together to form such an excellent combination. Crucially, sound is a key area. There are many times in which we are placed in the characters' position and we simply hear the world above instead of seeing it.
This film is Dan Trachtenberg’s directorial debut and it’s simply breath-taking for a first outing. It stands alone on its own, meaning you don’t have to worry about watching the original Cloverfield.
10 Cloverfield Lane is a fantastic thriller you should definitely check out if you haven't already.
